Family Mutual Insurance Co., formerly Northeast Mutual Insurance Company, strives to be a representative of you, the policyholder. As our name implies we are committed to you like family. After all, “just like family, we’re here when you need it most.” We endeavor to provide high quality, low cost insurance products to farm, ranch and town residents in North Dakota. Above all, we provide peace of mind in the face of random catastrophic acts of God and Man alike, with the will and resources to restore our members to pre-loss status. We are very proud to be called a “small” company because that keeps us close to our members and we are proud to be not only a company, but a family.
Company Profile
Family Mutual Insurance Co., formerly Northeast Mutual Insurance Company, is a county mutual property insurance company. Family Mutual is one of 14 North Dakota county mutual companies, which is down from 25 companies in 1980. Family Mutual is the product of a multi-company merger in 1999 between Towner County Mutual of Cando, ND, Cavalier County Mutual of Osnabrock, ND and Pembina County Mutual of Cavalier ND.
A fourth county mutual company, LaMoure-Greenfield, merged with what was then Northeast Mutual in 2001, making them one of the largest of the remaining county mutuals. The company, now known as Family Mutual, currently maintains three offices, one in Cando, N.D., one in LaMoure, N.D., and another in Mandan, N.D.
As of 12-31-05, Family Mutual insured 518 million dollars of property in 30 counties in central and eastern North Dakota. The company’s surplus to policyholders was 2.3 million dollars and the year 2005 produced in excess of 2.2 million dollars in collected premium.

Grinnell Reinsurance Company of Grinnell, Iowa, reinsures Family Mutual for all excess loss. Grinnell is a 400 million dollar reinsurance company specializing in County Mutual Insurance Companies. In 2000, Family Mutual started RMS, a sub company performing risk management services for Northeast Mutual and other mutual insurance companies in North Dakota. RMS employs four full-time and two part-time employees.
A seven member Board of Directors headed by President Gerald Peterson of Langdon, ND, controls Family Mutual. Family Mutual employs thirteen North Dakotans with their annual payroll and benefits well exceeding $300,000.00 primarily in rural North Dakota.
